Q&A with North’s new assistant principal

By: Bradley Cole

As North Henderson kicks off the new school year welcoming students back to school, they are also bringing in a new addition to the administration. North alum Andrew VunCannon joins North as an assistant principal. Get to know VunCannon a little better in our Q&A session with him below.

What is your background? Where did you work before this?

I went Edneyville Elementary, Apple Valley Middle, and North Henderson, where I graduated from in 2001, and then went to UNC-Charlotte for my undergrad degree. After teaching at Apple Valley Middle for one year, I moved to Charlotte. I wanted to teach and coach at the high school level, so I spent the last 11 years at East Mecklenburg High School teaching social studies, and coaching basketball and track.

What do you look forward to at North?

I love the community. The school I was at in Charlotte was a really big school, but there wasn’t a lot of community support. Being back at a school where the school is a very important part of the community was important to me. It’s important to me to give back to a community that has meant so much to me.

In your mind, what does the future look like for North?

You guys are doing a lot of great things already. It’s obvious with the academic growth taking place, that things are going in the right direction. My vision for North Henderson is that I want it to be the best school in the county and the best school in Western North Carolina. There’s kind of a personal pride that’s always been there that came through here with. I want everything about North to be great. From the extracurriculars, to the sports, to the clubs, to the arts, academically. I want it to be thought of as a place that sets the bar really high and that other schools can look up to. I have a passion to see this school be successful. I always have, I always will.

If you weren’t in education, what would you do for a living?

Something still working with students or with the community. I have a passion for helping people. It kind of gives me purpose. I don’t know if it would be something in law enforcement or with a community agency, but it would something working with the people.

What are you doing in your free time?

I have a really good group of friends. We watch sporting events, have cookouts, things of that nature. I also like to exercise, hang out with friends and family.

Favorite food?

My mom’s roast beef.

Favorite sports teams?

I’m a Charlotte Hornets, Carolina Panther, Atlanta Braves, and UNC-Charlotte fan.
