North senior recognizes classmates with senior project

When pondering on what to do for her Senior Service Project, Maya Ellis knew she wanted to make a difference.

The North Henderson senior did just that.

Knowing Instagram is popular among high school-aged students, Ellis– with the help of her mentor Rachel Durant, who is an English teacher at North Henderson– created an Instagram page titled NHHS Senior Spotlight.

The page is designed to uplift the 2016 senior class with encouraging words from their fellow classmates using Instagram posts such as the one pictured below. Ellis chose a senior to spotlight out of a handful of names submitted in by students on a weekly basis.

Our next senior is Ezra Morrison, and yes this is his parking spot. Name: Ezra Morrison Age: 18 One word to describe you: Based (is when you don't care what people think) Favorite class: Psychology One thing you're excited for during your senior year: Prom Random fact about yourself: I enjoy a nice round of golf on an overcast Sunday, it's a wonderful way to end the week. Ellis found the motivation to create the page for her Senior Project in a variety of different ways.

“I created the Instagram page because I wanted to create something positive for [North] as this is my last year of high school,” Ellis said. “So many negative things circulated through the school and I really wanted to change that and make sure people are appreciated and recognized for their achievements before we all part ways in June.”

As weeks went on, Ellis spotlighted 22 seniors. She hopes to uplift more in the future, even though she has completed her project.

“[The page] has been successful and I really wanna get it back up and running after Christmas Break when I get a lot more time,” said Ellis.

To top off her unique project, Ellis created a Senior Spotlight video that had the same concept as the Instagram page. The video once again uplifted members from the current North senior class with messages from their closest friends.
