Boy’s Basketball: Tuscola 64, North Henderson 76
On Friday night, Austin Nelson once again showed why he is one of the top basketball players in the region.
The North Henderson senior scored 28 points and grabbed 10 rebounds to record his seventh double-double of the season. His big night helped North beat Tuscola by a final score of 76-64, as the Knights bounced back with a win after a tough loss to East Henderson on Tuesday.
“Austin just did what Austin does,” North coach Justin Paris said on Nelson. “He comes out, has double-digit scoring, double-digit rebounding every night,” Paris would add. You just come to expect it from him.”
To start the game, North came out firing on all cylinders. Numerous Knights contributed to their big first half, as they were up on the Mountaineers 39-28 going into the break.
In the second half, Tuscola wouldn’t back down. The Mountaineers would cut North’s commanding lead to five.
Although, North’s do it all point guard Kyle Decker came up big on all aspects of the ball as well to ultimately lead North over their conference foe. He finished the night with 11 points and 8 rebounds.
“Kyle is our glue guy. He doesn’t do anything exceptional well, but he does everything good,” Paris said on Decker. “He’s kinda our floor leader.”
Junior Hunter Stackhouse and sophomore Reese Mercer both chipped in 8 points.
North’s win moves them to 5-2 on the season and 2-1 in conference play. They will turn around and play at Cherokee tomorrow.
Girls Basketball: Tuscola 49, North Henderson 32
North Henderson hit a bump in the road on Friday night.
The Lady Knights lost their first game since November 15th to the Lady Mountaineers.
It was a defensive battle to start. Tuscola only had a 6-4 lead over North after the first quarter. The now 5-5 Mountaineers would add-on to that lead by ten points to take a 16-8 advantage going into the break.
“In the first half we did a good job defensively,” North coach Sue Moon said on her team’s first 16 minutes.
However, Tuscola’s offense would get hot in the second half to go on and beat North by a final score of 49-32.
“We’ll have to work on every aspect game,” Moon added.
Teegan Bullock led the way for the Lady Knights with 13 points. Caronlie Marsh followed that up with 6 points and 7 rebounds, and Shelly Banz added 4 points. The team moves to 5-2 on the season and 2-1 in conference play.
North will play at Cherokee tomorrow with a girls starting time of 6:00 p.m.
