North Henderson went into Wednesday night ready to dominate and that’s exactly what they did. The 6th seeded Lady Knights (20-2, 12-2) hosted the 11th seeded Bulldogs (13-9, 11-7) of Jay M. Robinson High School. North took the match winning 3-0 with set scores of 25-11, 25-8, and 25-17.
To open the match, the Knights went on a commanding 12-5 run. After a Lady Bulldog timeout, North never stopped and forced another Robinson timeout after an Anna Baldwin ace. The Knights cruised to a 22-11 win in Set 1.
An inadvertent whistle opened Set 2 and the two squads traded points. Then Anna Baldwin held serve for 14 straight points to help the Lady Knights take the set, 25-8.
In set 3, North started a 4 point run then gave way 6 straight points from the Lady Bulldogs, which forced a Knight timeout. The score stayed close for the remainder of the set until the Knights chalked up 5 straight to end it, 25-17, and take the match 3-0.
Anna Baldwin lead the way with 27 service points, and added 8 aces, 7 kills, and 5 digs. “ I just know I’m doing my part and playing my role and helping my team out.” “It feels really good and you just have to keep focus and keep your serve in”,said Baldwin on holding serve for 14 straight points in the second set.
Caroline Marsh recorded 22 kills, 13 digs, and 2 blocks, Teegan Bullock had 26 assists, 8 digs, 3 kills, and 3 aces, and Aly White added 10 service points and 9 digs.
“The first game is always weird, they may be nervous for some games, so I’m really happy that we advanced, really happy how we played the first and second set because we controlled the tempo in those sets,” said Head Coach Sue Moon on advancing to the second round of the playoffs. “The third set we lost focus and we talked about that because we have a tendency to do that. So we’ve got to find a way to stop that from happening.”
Moon talked about how they came back from being down in the third set and regained focus. “Well you had Aly come back and serve some tough points. Our serving game was awesome tonight and so that’s what we needed, some really strong serves from the back line. That third set, the other team is going to make adjustments, we have to counter. When we started making those adjustments in the third set, that’s when we were successful.”
With the win, the Jay M. Robinson Lady Bulldogs ends their season at 13-9. The Lady Knights move to 20-2 on the season and advance to the second round of the NCHSAA 3A Playoffs where they will travel to 3rd seeded North Iredell (23-3, 14-1) tomorrow evening. The Raiders defeated 11th seeded St. Stephens (11-13, 8-6) 3-0 (25-15, 25-10, 25-13) tonight in their first round match up.
